On Letting Go

Mary Olive was a soul stirring poet who wrote passionately about nature and also about grief.

In her poem "In Backwater Woods" she writes,

To live in this world

you must be able

to do three things;

to love what is mortal;

to hold it

against your bones knowing

your own life depends on it;

and when the time comes to

let it go,

to let it go.

If you love what is mortal, and you feel as though your life depends on it, how could you ever let it go? There is a faith answer and it is this; only if you know, deep in your bones, that there is something or someone in this mortal universe that is not.
